The general ceramics classes are suitable for all levels of ability. We keep the classes small so that we can tailor our teaching to your needs. The classes are bookable in 4 week blocks and many of our students have stayed with us for several years! Bring your sketches, photographs or any research materials you wish to use as a starting point. We will guide and support your making with both hand-building and throwing, introducing you to a wide range of techniques to realise your ideas. All materials are included in the class fee and there is a small additional charge for firing by weight of finished work.
This class is especially for beginners where we focus on one technique each week guiding you step by step through the process. You will explore hand-building through pinch, coil and slab work plus the more unusual Japanese carving technique known as Kurinuki. You will be introduced to throwing on the wheel and how to prepare the clay ready for throwing. We'll focus on centering, securing the clay on the wheel and pulling up the walls of the clay into a cylinder. You'll learn the basics of how to turn your work to refine it's shape and base profile.
A weekly three hour workshop for anyone with experience of working with clay who would like to develop their projects independently. Karen, our tutor and studio technician is on hand to give advice about techniques and processes. A good range of clays, slips, oxides and glazes are provided and advice is given on the best materials to use to achieve the results you want.
We can also purchase specialist clays and glazes on your behalf. The project development sessions provide a fully supportive environment to explore, experiment and progress your ideas. There is a small additional charge for finished and fired work calculated by weight and size.
Explore throwing on the wheel, have an introduction to hand building, experiment with surface decoration and select glazes in our three and a half hour taster sessions. The tasters are a brilliant way to start your journey with clay and get to know the studio and find out about the wide range of classes we run through the week. At the end of the session you will be able to choose three pieces you would like to keep, these will be glazed and fired and can be picked up 3 to 4 weeks after your session. The cost includes all materials, firing, tea, coffee and biscuits. We can post your work to you with an additional charge for post & packing dependent on size and weight.
We regularly host pottery parties for adults, children and family groups. Team building and well-being clay workshops for corporate and community organisations, INSET training for schools, taster sessions for private groups and one to one bespoke sessions. Please email the studio to give us an idea of your requirements and we will call you to discuss in detail.
