Claire Loder slab built heads

Saturday 9th April 10am to 4.30pm

  • 120 British pounds

About this class

We are super excited to welcome Claire Loder to the studio this April to lead a workshop where we will be hand building large scale heads. We will explore what constitutes a face; what can be added/subtracted and how this affects meaning. The heads will be built using slabs with extra elements constructed by coiling or sculpting. As soon as the heads are able to support themselves, we will start working on the surface, painting with slips, underglazes and the wet clay itself. Claire’s practice meditates on the human face and is driven by the material qualities of clay. She is currently developing the role of photography in her work – to capture the raw qualities of clay and document the cycles of growth and decay when the surface of her works are seeded and allowed to germinate. Claire Loder is an artist and educator based in Bath. Clay and drawing are central to her practice – her focus is predominately figurative. Originally trained in Illustration and Graphic Design at Bath Spa University she made the switch to 3D in 2004 with a Ceramics MA in Cardiff. Following her MA she received the Crafts Council’s Next Move Award. Her book ‘The New Ceramics - Sculpting and Handbuilding’ was published by Bloomsbury in 2013. She is a lecturer at Bath Spa University. Claire is also the founder of ’Blooming Whiteway’, an ongoing socially engaged project in Bath where she combines her creative expertise with horticulture and community. £120 including all materials and firing
