About this class
We are very excited to welcome acclaimed potter Dylan Bowen to the studio in July to lead a full-day workshop exploring his expressive way of working with terracotta clay and slip. We will focus on the development of a loose and free way of working, using simple hand-building techniques with wires, knives and mark making tools to create a series of flat dishes and 3d objects in terracotta. The work will be drenched with slip ready to add spontaneous marks with slip trailers, brushes and sgraffito tools. Dylan Bowen is essentially the action painter of British studio ceramics, bringing a new energy to the surface of clay with his rhythmical and highly powered pourings of slip. Influenced by the English tradition of slipware pottery, Dylan studied at Camberwell College of Art and trained with his dad, Clive Bowen, at Shebbear Pottery. Inspired by music and abstract expressionism, Dylan is always hunting for marks to translate onto his work. Through his relaxed throwing, his broadside cutting, altering and trailing, Bowen keeps any control at arm’s length, putting more emphasis on spontaneity and gestural freedom. Dylan's work is exhibited internationally.
