Making glazes: Art and alchemy
One day workshop: Saturday 24 January 10.00 to 4.00 - fully booked
About this class
A full day introduction to the essentials of making glazes: What is a glaze? Where do the materials come from? What role does each material play? Hours of careful making, an initial bisque firing, a quick dip in a mysterious bucket of liquid and in a leap of faith the work is left in the hands of the Kiln Gods! A magical transformation occurs and the powdered materials emerge durable, glossy and hopefully incredibly beautiful. But how does this happen? In this hands-on practical workshop you will explore the key ingredients used to create a stoneware glaze and gain a theoretical understanding of the basic chemistry of a range of materials and how they can be used to influence the surface, texture and colour of a glaze. Participants will learn how to interpret a recipe, make a base glaze and experiment with a selection of oxides to create a variety of colours. The test tiles will be fired to Cone 7 at our studio and will be available for collection approximately two weeks later. All the materials and test tiles will be provided but please bring an apron and your lunch. If you have your own good quality dust mask please bring it along, we will have disposable ones available for you to use.
