About this class
We're delighted to announce the dates for the second of our workshops collaborating with florist Rachel Grimes who runs her company The Mirror and the Veil creating stunning arrangements for weddings, events and art projects. This time we'll be taking inspiration from the work of Frances Palmer, a potter and gardener who has been working from her home studio in Connecticut for over 34 years. Frances is, in turn, inspired by the tradition of British gardens and gardeners - most notably Charleston, Cedric Morris and Constance Spry who designed a range of vases for the Fulham Pottery. Frances creates an eclectic range of beautifully decorated vases that provide the structure and foundation for her incredible displays of home grown blooms. In the first workshop on Sunday 4th September, we'll be focusing on sprig moulds and how to use sprigs to create our own highly decorated vases. We will be using the range of moulds that we have in the studio and we will show you a couple of techniques to make your own sprig moulds. You will use the sprigs to decorate pre-thrown vases and vessels that will then be fired and glazed ready to use in the second workshop in October. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and anyone with some experience of working with clay. There will be a range of thrown forms to choose as your base shape but if you are already a student or open access member at the studio please feel free to bring along your own thrown vessel to work with - just make sure it's kept at just before the leather hard stage. The second workshop on Saturday 1st October is all about the flowers - the late summer bounty of dahlias, asters, cosmos, crocosmia, salvia etc. Rachel will show you how to use your vase to create beautiful displays that you can then take away with you. This workshop is also open to anyone who hasn't attended the first making workshop if you already have a vase that you would like to use as the centre point of your display. The price for the first workshop includes all materials and firing. The price for the second workshop includes a wonderful selection of flowers for your display. Refreshments are included for both workshops but please bring a packed lunch for the full-day workshop.
