A professional ceramics studio in the heart of Eastbourne with fantastic equipment and expert technical support. We offer classes for all abilities and ages led by our team of dedicated artist-teachers plus a range of taster sessions, talks and specialist workshops. For more experienced makers we offer open access studio membership, project development and a standalone firing service.
The studio takes part in several widely advertised arts events throughout the year where students and members have the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work. We welcome applications from artists and designers for our residency programme where we offer studio space and technical help to develop new projects.
As a Community Interest Company based in the Devonshire Collective's Makerspace, we are dedicated to providing opportunities for all members of the community to explore their creativity, share our facilities and experiment with clay. We work with community groups to offer bespoke workshops and support wellbeing through the practice of craft.
The classes are suitable for complete beginners or those with more experience. We keep the classes small so that we can tailor our teaching to your needs. If you have never used clay before we will start by showing you how to construct forms using a variety of hand building techniques including pinch, coiling, slab and press moulds. You will then be introduced to throwing on the potter's wheel so that you can decide which technique best suits your project. We look at a wide variety of surface decoration techniques using slips, underglazes, oxides and glazes. All materials are included in the class fee and there is a small additional charge for firing by weight of finished work.
In our three and a half hour Saturday taster sessions you will explore throwing on the wheel, have an introduction to hand building, experiment with surface decoration and select glazes. The taster sessions are a brilliant way to start your journey with clay, get to know the studio and find out about the wide range of classes we run through the week. At the end of the session you will be able to choose three pieces you would like to keep, these will be glazed and fired and can be picked up 3 to 4 weeks after your session. All materials and firing charges are included in the taster price.
Setting up your own studio to develop your practice is an expensive business. By becoming a member of Eastbourne Studio Pottery you will have full access to an excellent range of equipment and tools in our large communal work spaces and dedicated shelf space to store your work in progress. We have a great community of makers in the studio who have expressed how working alongside each other has stimulated the development of ideas and helped build the social and professional networks which would not be possible working in isolation. We nurture our community through a range of talks, events, shows and selling opportunities.
