Towner Eastbourne

6th & 7th of July 2024

500+ plates made in 37 free workshops

with 20 visiting artists & the ESP team

Eastbourne Studio Pottery invited over 60 local groups to take part in 35 free, artist-led workshops between November 2023 and May 2024. Each workshop welcomed six people from two different community, arts, health, environment or education-focused groups, plus independent businesses in the local area to create together as a catalyst for conversation and the cross-fertilisation of ideas.

The project was supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and East Sussex Arts Partnership.

In each workshop we made plates using a wide variety of techniques, not all restricted to traditional ceramics processes. We worked with 20 visiting artists, supported by the tutors from Eastbourne Studio Pottery, to introduce new ways of working with clay.

Over 500 plates made during the project were displayed at Towner Eastbourne on Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 July 2024, in an exhibition, free to visit and open to all.  All the workshop participants were invited to a special celebration tea at Towner where everyone took their plate home or did a swap with another maker!

This project celebrated creativity, community, and making connections. We were delighted to be working with Eastbourne Alive to celebrate the Turner Prize 2023 and offer the people of Eastbourne a chance to explore working with clay.

Huge thanks to all the participants that took part and all our wonderful visiting artists:
