Anna Thomson: Slip casting with colour

We’re delighted to welcome ceramic artist Anna Thomson to the studio for a one-day workshop exploring the principles and creative possibilities of slip-casting through the processes used in her distinctive body of work. Anna has exhibited her work in high profile ceramic events including Ceramic Art London, London Craft Week and PotFest. Anna’s practice rethinks slip-casting within a contemporary craft context. Her approach has been described as “extreme slip-casting”, combining technical precision with creative experimentation and material investigation to create complex, layered and highly individual pieces. Beginning with the fundamentals of the slip-casting process, the workshop will establish a practical understanding of how to use moulds and slip before moving into more experimental approaches. We will learn how to colour the slip using body stains, working together to produce four colours that will be shared by the group throughout the day. With the prepared material, participants will create a series of small pieces building layers of colour with the white base slip. Anna will have pre-cast pieces ready for everyone to explore working with the creative possibilities of fettling and surface additions. The workshop will encourage curiosity, experimentation and a broader understanding of what slip-casting can offer within a studio ceramics practice.
