Elaine Bolt: Porcelain sculpture

We're delighted that Elaine Bolt is returning to the studio to lead a two-day workshop where we will be making small sculptures from porcelain. Responding to your own collection of found objects, the porcelain pieces you make can either be physically combined with fragments from your collection of found treasures or fixed in relationship to them to make a completely unique wall mounted piece. Elaine's work is guided by a sense of narrative, and steeped in the context of the countryside around her studio. Her work includes sculptural work, hand-built wall pieces and thrown vessels, made in porcelain and stoneware clay. The wall pieces combine found materials along with hand-built ceramic objects which aim to blur the boundaries between the made and the found. The work is finished in a muted palette, informed by the gentle colours and tones found in the landscape of the South Downs and Sussex shoreline. Workshop day one: Elaine will demonstrate various techniques for hand-building with porcelain, including how to colour the clay with stains and oxides and how to incorporate nichrome wire for joining and mounting small objects. Workshop day two: The pieces you made on day one will have been fired and ready to use with your collection of found objects. Elaine will demonstrate how to plan your compositions, how to combine and fix natural elements to the porcelain, and the various methods for successfully mounting the delicate porcelain sculptures onto card.
